MACC Monthly Conference Call: Mark Naison, Priscilla Sanstead & Marla Kilfoyle, of the Badass Teachers Association (BAT) – Tues Dec 17 – 7:00pm CST (8:00pm EST)
Join us for a National Conference Call featuring Mark Naison and Priscilla Sanstead, Co-Founders of the National Badass Teachers Association (BATs) and Marla Kilfoyle, BAT administrator and teacher/parent! “Let TEACHERS Teach!” is the featured topic for this conference call on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 from 7:00 pm CST (8:00pm EST) Marla will be speaking about her experiences as a classroom teacher under Common Core; Mark and Priscilla will speak to the many reforms underway in America, including Common Core and encourage teachers as they work within the reform landscape.
The Badass Teachers Association is a national phenomenem without rival. Founded on June 14, 2013, the BATs numbers have swelled to near 35,000 teachers. Started at the same time, The Badass Parents Association helps inform parents about the most recent education reforms. A recent off-shoot is the Badass School Board Association.
Mark Naison, PhD, is Professor of African-American Studies and History at Fordham University, Director of Fordham’s Urban Studies Program and the BAT CO-Founder. He is the author of three books and over 100 articles on African-American History, urban history, and the history of sports.
When not doing historical research, Naison likes to play tennis, golf and basketball, and make periodic forays into the media. He has appeared on the O’Reilly Factor, the Discovery Channel’s Greatest American Competition (as Dr King’s advocate), and on the Dave Chappell Show, where his “performance” has been preserved on that show’s Second Year DVD.
Priscilla has experiences with a wide number of educational choices through her grown daughter. She was an active volunteer in schools – Montessori, Public Charter (1999 – 2000, before corporate deform), Public, Private, and Progressive – then transitioned to homeschooling through a CA state charter, and finally to unschooling with her autodidact daughter.
A big advocate for libraries, she has run many school and public book sales. She assembled, funded, and operated a Florida public charter school library (1999 – 2001) and volunteered full-time for a private school library for a year. A volunteer nature guide for 6 years, she managed the volunteer group and led hundreds of school tours. She taught remedial math at a private college for a year, and became a vocal advocate for changes in math as well as reading education.
An avid “people connector”, Priscilla runs several other much smaller education and learning communities on Facebook. She volunteered with the social movement UnCollege (.org) for about 2 years, running the online community she founded there. Attracting and coordinating volunteers were the focus of a museum position and a county government job. In her free time she is an art museum docent and gardener.
Marla Kilfoyle, NBCT, began her adventure into the Badass Teacher Association by way of being a parent advocate on Long Island in such groups as Parents and Teachers Against Common Core and LI Opt-Out. Marla has been a teacher in the Social Studies Department at Oceanside.
