KNOW YOUR RIGHTS! FERPA ANNUAL SCHOOL NOTIFICATION
Has your school given you their annual notice on FERPA? FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, is a federal law that allows schools to disclose personally identifiable information to 3rd parties — any 3rd party.
From the Waconia School website:
If you’ve not filled out your annual notice, please call them and ask where to find this disclosure. Annual notice must be given in order to be compliant with the law to either email parents or prominently post on the school website. In any case, every parent should be given ANNUAL NOTICE. Just like your local clinic with the HIPPA disclosure, schools must also disclose the dissemination of directory information and what that directory information contains per that district . Directory information could be student name, photograph, address, phone number, email, sports teams, parent’s names, etc.
Know your rights and protect your child’s and your personally identifiable information. This was not easily found on my school district’s website, how many clicks did it take for you to find yours? Thanks to this parent from the Waconia School District.
