MACC Sponsors State-Wide Conference Calls

Minnesotans Against Common Core (MACC) will hold a series of State-Wide Conference Calls to better help inform the public about the implementation of a new educational system called Common Core Standards.  Each month, MACC will hold one or two conference calls engaging national speakers on the various concerns surrounding this movement.  The first call is set for September 17, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

Minnesota began implementing Common Core Standards during the 2012-2013 school year through English/Language Arts only.  English/Language Arts Common Core curriculum is being taught due to a federal grant program called, Race to the Top, initiated only months into the Obama administration.  Accepting the ELA standards was contingent upon receiving the grant money, despite the fact that the standards had not even been written when the Governor, Commissioner of Education and 300 School Districts approved the  federal grant monies during the 2009 economic crisis.  Although our state did allow for legislative review of the Math Standards, which we flatly refused, we know that certain Minnesota school districts are unfortunately teaching Common Core Math.    The Social Studies Standards were approved by the Governor and Commissioner of Education, only, barring legislative review and input.

We are reaching out to a number of national and state experts, who are directly involved in teaching or in research regarding Common Core.    Our first two experts are Jane Robbins from the American Principles Project and Joy Pullman of the Heartland Institute.  We hope you find these informational calls beneficial and will invite others to listen in, as well as, ask questions.

Brief Audit of Bill Gates Common Core Spending

They say that money can’t buy happiness, but it’s sure being used to buy the hearts and minds of our kids – just ask Bill Gates!  According to  Mercedes Schneider, Common Core State Standards would more aptly be named, the “Common Core Gates Standards”.  Gates is that entity who has thrown millions at trade organizations, policy think-tanks, the AFT and NEA teacher unions, universities, corporations, and even the PTA in order to persuade the general populace and assuage the fears of doubters.

Our educational system is in the process of being bought and sold.  Schneider ponders ,”  Can Bill Gates buy a foundational democratic institution?  Will America allow it?  The fate of CCSS will provide crucial answers to those looming questions.”

Homeschoolers to be Arrested/Detained Under DeKalb Truancy Ordinance

Logo of the Home School Legal Defense Association.

ACTION ALERT!  HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Association) is asking for immediate help to stop a truancy order that threatens the rights of homeschoolers under an unusual “emergency” timeline.  The meeting is tonight at 6:00 p.m. at the DeKalb City Council including a possible vote.

“This ordinance gives the police sweeping power to arrest (“detain”) any homeschooled child they think may be truant and enroll them in public school… Additionally, the compulsory age of 17 will be changed to 18, under this ordinance.”

HSLDA is asking citizens and parents of all school children – public, private and homeschooled to attend.  All children will be affected, but homeschoolers would be hurt the most.

Blitz State Leaders

Our MACC BLITZ CAMPAIGN begins this week!  Professional and courteous communication with our state leaders.  We are informing and educating leaders about Common Core State Standards, stating our opposition, asking for a complete repeal/full stop to implementation and asking for their position.   We start the campaign with the Education committee members of the House and Senate, then moving to our Senators, Governor and DOE.

Introducing SONDRA ERICKSON!!!  Rep. Erickson is the Republican lead in the Education Policy committee and sits on the Education Finance committee.   Let’s find out Sondra’s position on Common Core!  You may comment on this post, if desired, to let us know about your conversation.  Choose your own mode of communication.  We CAN make a great impact when we work together!!!

NOTE:  When calling your legislator, do not be concerned about whether or not you get everything said “just right”.  It will be more effective if it does not sound “canned.”  The biggest factor will be the volume of calls which translates into votes for or against the legislator and our cause.  Call early and, if you can, call again or use another mode of communication.

Using the guide below, keep your calls short and to the point.  You will most likely talk with an aid.  Offer to provide detailed documentation for the legislator if they are interested and someone to meet with them at their convenience.  You do not have to meet them, unless you desire.  We can meet with them.  Let  them know about our group, Minnesotans Against Common Core.  Have some fun and know that this IS important!!!

Always be cordial and pleasant and “smile when you dial”.   Always thank them for listening and assure them that you or someone else will follow up.  Common Core will be an issue at District caucuses!

Common Core Telephone Call Guide/E-mail or Mail Template

“Hello, this is _________________________, and I’m concerned about our state’s education programs.  I am a voter in the ________________ District and I object to the Common Core State Standards and loss of Local Control.

“What is Representative Erickson’s (or if you are speaking with Rep Erickson – YOUR) position on this?”  If against, encourage and support.  Most likely, they are wanting additional information or may be in favor out of ignorance.  If so, then…)  ((In no particular order – you may have other concerns)).  I, as a citizen, had no knowledge of Common Core Standards until recently.

“I will explain VERY briefly why I am against implementing Common Core Standards.

*  It is a loss of Local Control, that removes the voice of parents, teachers, principals, and School Boards.  I believe in parents and teachers making decisions about our schools.

* Common Core is unconstitutional and goes against the 10th amendment and three federal laws.  Again, from a legal standpoint, Common Core is against our laws and Constitution.

* Costs are estimated to be $16 billion with 90% paid by the states and we may have NO say in what’s being taught, when standards are copyrighted.

* The data tracking requirement from prenatal to workforce is an intrusive violation of the privacy rights of our children and their parents.

* The standards themselves are a deliberate dumbing down of our children as shown by performance scores that have steadily deteriorated since the inception of the Department of Education.

* The standards are so low that the two educators on the Common Core Standards Validation Committee refused to sign off.

Appreciate everyone “doing their part” by informing our state leaders!

Keeping you informed on CCSS in Minnesota
